چکیده

Vortex induced vibrations (VIV) of long flexible risers subjected to ocean currents exhibit a strongly nonlinear phenomenon. Although significant efforts have been done for the frequency or time-frequency analysis of this complicated phenomenon, an effective method is still lacking. The objective of this paper is to provide a new method — a Prony-based method — for analyzing the time-varying frequency components of VIV response signals. Physical insight associated with the VIV motion can be further gained through the Prony-based analysis partially because it does not suffer the leakage and frequency resolution problems of the Fourier-based methods.

On the Vortex-induced Vibration Response of a Model Riser and Location of Sensors for Fatigue Damage Prediction

This study is concerned with vortex-induced vibration (VIV) of deepwater marine risers. Riser response measurements from model tests on a densely instrumented long, flexible riser in uniform and sheared currents offer an almost ideal set-up for our work. Our objectives are two-fold: (i) we use the measured data to describe complexities inherent in riser motions accompanying VIV; and (ii) we dis...

Monitoring VIV fatigue damage on marine risers

Long flexible cylinders (e.g. risers, tendons, mooring lines) exposed to the marine environment encounter ocean currents leading to vortex-induced vibration (VIV). These oscillations, often driven at high frequencies over extended periods of time may result in structural failure of the member due to fatigue damage accumulation. Recent developments in instrumentation and installation of data acq...

3D Finite element modeling for Dynamic Behavior Evaluation of Marin Risers Due to VIV and Internal Flow

The complete 3D nonlinear dynamic problem of extensible, flexible risers conveying fluid is considered. For describing the dynamics of the system, the Newtonian derivation procedure is followed. The velocity field inside the pipe formulated using hydrostatic and Bernoulli equations. The hydrodynamic effects of external fluids are taken into consideration through the nonlinear drag forces in var...

Investigation of vortex-induced vibration phenomenon in verticallong circular slender structure with non-uniform flows

Analyzing the vortex-induced vibration of a slender marine structure withlength to diameter ratio up to 200 is the objective of this study. This slender is free to move in both in-line and cross flow directions and immersed completely in water. Three different types of shear currents pass on it and cause to vibrate slender in different forms. Nowadays, these vibrations are very important for de...

Using Model Test Data to Assess Viv Factor of Safety for Scr and Ttr in Gom

This paper presents results obtained as part of the DeepStar Phase 10 program on VIV Factors of Safety. The objective was to develop a general methodology to calibrate Factors of Safety for VIV-induced fatigue and to apply it to partially straked risers. This was achieved using reliability methods, accepted industry VIV prediction software and state-of-the-art model test experiments. Most oil c...
